Picnic Spots

Shelki DAm -
A large dam situated 3 km from railway station. Beautiful location for an ideal picnic and holiday spot. Best time to visit is at the end of rainy season when the dam will be overflowing with water and lot of birds seens.

Pippri Lake-
A large lake and beautiful sceneries around it with small mountains. Just 2 km from railway station. Best time to visit is at the end of rainy season.

Connectivity

Udgir has a railway station on the Parli-Bidar rail route. By road, Udgir is well connected with Belshakarga (9 km), Karkheli (10 km), Latur (60 km) and Nanded (88 km.)

Historical events

Udgir is also known for its historical events - Great war between marathas and Nizam took place on 3rd Feb, 1760 where marathas registetred victory over nizam. A historical fort 3 km away from the station is said to have been built by Chalukya King later developed by Bahamani Kings of 14th century.

Name -Udgir??

In 13th century, there existed one saint by name Uddhalic Rushi Alias Udgir Baba. He attained sanctity and salvation. Hence this town is named after him as UDGIR

Udgir Fort

Udgir Fort is a well built fort of Pre-Bahamani age, located at udgir in Latur District of Maharashtra. Built in 1493 AD, it was named after the famous Hindu Saint Udaygiri Rishi.
The design of the fort is quadrilateral. The fort has several palaces and durbar halls. The important among them is the Samadhi of Udaygir Maharaj, which is 60 ft beneath the normal ground level. Some rare inscriptions written in Arabic and Persian can be seen inside the fort.
The rampart surrounding the fort is high and made of dressed stone with round bastions. The fort also has a moat, which was always kept filled with water. Badi Baoli, Jeeta Zera, Shakkar Baoli and Som Terth are the four wells situated here.
Udgir is about 60 km east of Latur. Udgir Railway Station is the nearest railhead.

Commerce

Today the town is an important commercial centre. It is a taluka and also the subdivisional Headquarters.
The cattle market of Udgir has been famous mainly on account of the Devani breed of Bull which is not merely a graceful herbivore but equally efficient friend of the farmer.
